9~10장

Sir.9 [1] Do not be jealous of the wife of your bosom, and do not teach her an evil lesson to your own hurt. [2] Do not give yourself to a woman so that she gains mastery over your strength. [3] Do not go to meet a loose woman, lest you fall into her snares. [4] Do not associate with a woman singer, lest you be caught in her intrigues. [5] Do not look intently at a virgin, lest you stumble and incur penalties for her. [6] Do not give yourself to harlots lest you lose your inheritance. [7] Do not look around in the streets of a city, nor wander about in its deserted sections. [8] Turn away your eyes from a shapely woman, and do not look intently at beauty belonging to another; many have been misled by a woman's beauty, and by it passion is kindled like a fire. [9] Never dine with another man's wife, nor revel with her at wine; lest your heart turn aside to her, and in blood you be plunged into destruction. [10] Forsake not an old friend, for a new one does not compare with him. A new friend is like new wine; when it has aged you will drink it with pleasure. [11] Do not envy the honors of a sinner, for you do not know what his end will be. [12] Do not delight in what pleases the ungodly; remember that they will not be held guiltless as long as they live. [13] Keep far from a man who has the power to kill, and you will not be worried by the fear of death. But if you approach him, make no misstep, lest he rob you of your life. Know that you are walking in the midst of snares, and that you are going about on the city battlements. [14] As much as you can, aim to know your neighbors, and consult with the wise. [15] Let your conversation be with men of understanding, and let all your discussion be about the law of the Most High. [16] Let righteous men be your dinner companions, and let your glorying be in the fear of the Lord. [17] A work will be praised for the skill of the craftsmen; so a people's leader is proved wise by his words. [18] A babbler is feared in his city, and the man who is reckless in speech will be hated.	9 장 [1]사랑하는 아내를 질투하지 말아라. 너의 아내가 너를 해칠 생각을 품게 되리라. [2]그러나 아내에게 너무 빠지지도 말아라. 네가 오히려 밟힐지도 모른다. [3]창녀를 가까이하지 말아라. 그 여자의 홀림에 넘어갈까 두렵다. [4]기생집에 발길을 삼가라. 그 여자의 계략에 넘어갈까 두렵다. [5]처녀에게 눈을 팔지 말아라. 여자와 함께 벌을 받을까 두렵다. [6]창녀들에게 네 마음을 주지 말아라. 네 재산을 잃을까 두렵다. [7]길거리에서 한눈을 팔지 말 것이요 구석진 골목에서 서성거리지도 말아라. [8]예쁜 여자를 너무 바라보지 말고 남의 아내의 아름다움에 혹하지 말아라. 정욕이 불길처럼 타올라, 여자의 미모 때문에 신세를 망친 사람이 많다. [9]유부녀와 자리를 같이하지 말고 또한 술마실 기회도 갖지 말아라. 그 여자의 매력에 홀려 욕정이 멸망으로 치달을까 두렵다. [10]옛 친구를 버리지 말아라. 새로 사귄 친근 옛 친구만 못하다. 새 친구는 새 술과 같으니, 묵은 술이라야 제 맛이 난다. [11]악인의 성공을 부러워하지 말아라. 그의 말로가 어떠할 것인지를 너는 모른다. [12]악인들이 즐기는 것을 좋아하지 말아라. 그들이 죽기 전에 반드시 벌받으리라는 것을 알아두어라. [13]너를 죽일 권한을 가진 세도가를 멀리하여라. 그러면 그의 손에 죽을 염려가 없다. 만일 그에게 가까이 가게 되거든 네 몸을 사려라. 자칫하면 그가 네 목숨을 앗아 갈지도 모른다. 너는 함정 가운데를 걷고 있으며 적이 노리는 성벽 위를 걷는 것과 같다. [14]될 수 있는 대로 이웃과 잘 어울리고 현명한 사람들과 의견을 나눠라. [15]교양있는 사람들과 즐겨 이야기하되 지극히 높으신 분의 율법에 관해서 말을 나눠라. [16]의로운 사람들과 함께 식사를 하고 주님 두려워하는 것을 자랑으로 삼아라. [17]공예가는 그 솜씨로 칭찬을 받고 민중의 지도자는 그의 말로 명성을 얻는다. [18]빈말하는 사람은 따돌림을 받고 수다스러운 사람은 미움을 산다.
Sir.10 [1] A wise magistrate will educate his people, and the rule of an understanding man will be well ordered. [2] Like the magistrate of the people, so are his officials; and like the ruler of the city, so are all its inhabitants. [3] An undisciplined king will ruin his people, but a city will grow through the understanding of its rulers. [4] The government of the earth is in the hands of the Lord, and over it he will raise up the right man for the time. [5] The success of a man is in the hands of the Lord, and he confers his honor upon the person of the scribe. [6] Do not be angry with your neighbor for any injury, and do not attempt anything by acts of insolence. [7] Arrogance is hateful before the Lord and before men, and injustice is outrageous to both. [8] Sovereignty passes from nation to nation on account of injustice and insolence and wealth. [9] How can he who is dust and ashes be proud? for even in life his bowels decay. [10] A long illness baffles the physician; the king of today will die tomorrow. [11] For when a man is dead, he will inherit creeping things, and wild beasts, and worms. [12] The beginning of man's pride is to depart from the Lord; his heart has forsaken his Maker. [13] For the beginning of pride is sin, and the man who clings to it pours out abominations. Therefore the Lord brought upon them extraordinary afflictions, and destroyed them utterly. [14] The Lord has cast down the thrones of rulers, and has seated the lowly in their place. [15] The Lord has plucked up the roots of the nations, and has planted the humble in their place. [16] The Lord has overthrown the lands of the nations, and has destroyed them to the foundations of the earth. [17] He has removed some of them and destroyed them, and has extinguished the memory of them from the earth. [18] Pride was not created for men, nor fierce anger for those born of women. [19] What race is worthy of honor? The human race. What race is worthy of honor? Those who fear the Lord. What race is unworthy of honor? The human race. What race is unworthy of honor? Those who transgress the commandments. [20] Among brothers their leader is worthy of honor, and those who fear the Lord are worthy of honor in his eyes. [22] The rich, and the eminent, and the poor -- their glory is the fear of the Lord. [23] It is not right to despise an intelligent poor man, nor is it proper to honor a sinful man. [24] The nobleman, and the judge, and the ruler will be honored, but none of them is greater than the man who fears the Lord. [25] Free men will be at the service of a wise servant, and a man of understanding will not grumble. [26] Do not make a display of your wisdom when you do your work, nor glorify yourself at a time when you are in want. [27] Better is a man who works and has an abundance of everything, than one who goes about boasting, but lacks bread. [28] My son, glorify yourself with humility, and ascribe to yourself honor according to your worth. [29] Who will justify the man that sins against himself? And who will honor the man that dishonors his own life? [30] A poor man is honored for his knowledge, while a rich man is honored for his wealth. [31] A man honored in poverty, how much more in wealth! And a man dishonored in wealth, how much more in poverty!	10 장 [1]현명한 통치자는 그 백성을 잘 가르치고 지혜로운 사람의 통치에는 질서가 있다. [2]그 왕에 그 신하들이요 그 군주에 그 백성이다. [3]무식한 임금은 백성들의 파멸이요 통치자의 현명은 살기 좋은 나라를 만든다. [4]세상의 모든 왕권은 주님의 손안에 있는 것, 주님께서는 때를 따라 적당한 통치자를 세우신다. [5]인간의 성공은 주님 손에 달렸으니 통치자의 영예는 곧 주님의 영광이다. [6]네 이웃이 어떤 잘못을 저지르더라도 미워하지 말고 난폭한 행동으로 갚지 말아라. [7]오만은 주님께나 사람에게나 미움받는 것이며 부정은 주님께나 사람에게나 범죄이다. [8]부정과 폭력과 재물 때문에 왕권은 한 나라에서 다른 나라로 넘어간다. [9]흙과 먼지에 불과한 인간이 잘난 체할 것이 무엇이냐? 살아 있는 동안에도 벌써 그의 창자에서는 썩는 냄새가 난다. [10]오랜 병은 의사를 비웃는다. 오늘의 왕도 내일은 시체다. [11]사람이 죽으면 벌레와 짐승과 구더기의 차지다. [12]오만은 주님을 저버리는 데서 시작되고 사람의 마음이 창조주에게서 멀어질 때 생긴다. [13]오만은 죄의 시작이므로 오만에 사로잡힌 자는 악취를 낸다. 그러므로 주님께서는 이런 자들에게 엄청난 벌을 내리시며 그를 멸망시키신다. [14]주님께서는 군주들을 그 권좌에서 몰아 내시고 그 자리에 온유한 사람들을 앉히신다. [15]주님께서는 오만한 민족을 뿌리째 뽑아 내시고 그 자리에 겸손한 사람들을 심으신다. [16]주님께서는 그 민족들의 영토를 뒤엎으시고 그들을 송두리째 멸망시키신다. [17]주님께서는 그 중 몇 민족들을 멸망시키시고 이 땅에서 그들에 대한 기억마저 지워 버리신다. [18]오만은 인간을 위해서 있는 것이 아니요, 격렬한 분노 또한 인간의 지닐 바가 아니다. [19]어떤 유의 것이 영을 받을 것인가? 사람이다. 어떤 사람들인가? 주님을 두려워하는 사람들이다. 어떤 유의 것이 경멸을 받을 것인가? 사람이다. 어떤 사람들인가? 율법을 어기는 자들이다. [20]형제 중에서는 맏아들이 존경을 받으나 주님께서는 주를 두려워하는 사람들이 영예를 받는다. [21]주님을 두려워하는 것은 신망을 얻는 일의 시작이며 고집과 오만은 배척을 받는 일의 시작이다. [22]부자나 귀한 사람이나 가난한 사람이나 그들이 자랑할 것은 주님을 두려워하는 것뿐이다. [23]교양있는 사람을 가난하다고 하여 멸시함은 잘못이며 죄인을 두둔하는 것은 옳지 않다. [24]군주와 통치자와 권력자들이 영예를 차지하나 그 누구도 주님을 두려워하는 사람만큼은 위대하지 못하다. [25]자유인이 지혜로운 노예의 종이 되더라도 지식있는 사람은 그것을 불평하지 않는다. [26]일을 할 때 너무 재간을 부리지 말며 곤경에 빠졌을 대 허세를 부리지 말아라. [27]일하고 풍족하게 사는 사람이 뒷짐지고 허세부리는 빈털터리보다 낫다. [28]너는 들어라, 자존심을 가지되 겸손하고 네 자신을 평가하되 정당하게 하여라. [29]자신에게 죄지은 사람을 남이 어찌 변명해 줄 수 있으며 제 생활에 먹칠하는 사람을 남이 어찌 존경하겠느냐? [30]지혜가 있는 사람은 가난해도 존경을 받고 부자는 그 재산 때문에 존경을 받는다. [31]가난하면서도 존경을 받을 수 있다면 부자일 때 얼마나 더 큰 존경을 받겠느냐? 부자이면서도 경멸을 받는다면 가난하게 되었을 때 그의 처지가 어떻겠느냐?
